With an array of partners including the local community, Howard Koster is developing a bold new model of small-scale farming by changing many ecological, financial, and operational premises of agriculture. De Biesterhof, near the eastern border of The Netherlands, grows perennial grains and organic vegetables using agroecological practices while boosting biodiversity by planting trees and hedges that attract birds and insects. The farm has decommodified its land in perpetuity with the help of the grassroots organization Land van Ons ("Our Land"); worked closely with the community and volunteers; and developed a "relational value chain” to develop greater bioregional self-sufficiency.
